Yesterday a friend remarked that we are a quarter of the way through 2024… there was an intensity, an urgency behind this. But urgency for what? That is the question for this moon cycle.

Bringing awareness to the passage of the moon and sun helps bring our awareness to the energies which influence the Earth, in turn which move within us very deeply, as we are Earth’s children. This month will see the Spring Equinox, that time of balance in the year when the day and night are of equal length. Living near the coast, I am reminded that the Spring Equinox has a strong impact on the sea, especially at the new and full moons.
Read MoreWe humans are creatures of the Earth. We are kin with all the other animals, birds, plants, trees and fungi, insects, reptiles and fish, the rocks and mountains, all the water of the Earth and the air we breathe. Animism is the awareness of life in all the beings on the Earth, including the land herself. As all beings have life, they can be communicated with, worked with and honoured. We are all interconnected in the web of life. But its more than that.
Read MoreThe beginning of Spring, or the great awakening in the land, has begun. As daylight lengthens and the land begins to warm with the sun, though we might remain cocooned within our wintry nests, we can feel the rising energy of new life within the Earth. Hazel trees have started flowering, their catkins full of pollen, whilst snowdrops, primroses and early daffodils begin to send up new shoots. Many creatures are shaking off winter and becoming active. Robins, blue tits and blackbirds are already heralding in the dawn and for some, like the long-tailed tit, the breeding season has begun. So too mammals like the fox and grey squirrel and in many areas the mating calls of the common frog can be heard around ponds at night in February.
Read MoreHave you noticed, particularly on social media, that in January there is a proliferation of people advertising their work and putting out new content as soon as the New Year starts? When many of us are in bed and recovering from the intensity of Christmas and hopefully slowly unfurling from some degree of holiday. What is that about?
Read MoreIf Christmas didn’t go well for you this year, it’s possible that you are now feeling emotionally exhausted, triggered and even traumatised. In the dark, cold days of January when we are expected to go back to work and perform, we often don’t have time to process and heal, so our mental health can quickly nosedive.
What can we do?
Read MoreIn the UK, where I live, the ancestral spiritual traditions of the indigenous people of the land have gone. What remains has been Christianised, hence the celebration of Christmas. Many people in the UK are hungry to connect with older, Earth-based traditions that marked such pivotal moments as the winter solstice. Where do they go to find ancestral wisdom to help them connect in these ways?
Read MoreThe energy of a new moon is a time of new beginnings, a time to set intentions and plant seeds for the coming month. We can discern the specific energy of each moon cycle with a variety of tools - the energy of the season, following the wheel of the year around the sun, diving into the wisdom of our ancestors, those who lived closer to the Earth, and an awareness of astrology, forming part of that wisdom.
This month we are focusing on the Winter Solstice and the energy of Sagittarius. The themes are of expansive dreaming and winter hibernation.
Read MoreFor many years I have been gathering groups of people together at the new moon each month, to dive into the natural rhythms of the time and to journey into the spirit realms to work on the various themes of the month.
For many years I have meditated on the energies of the time prior to the monthly group and captured little nuggets of this to aid the work within the group. These monthly blog pages are the results of my meditations, written down in a more public format for the first time. They are designed to be worked with for at least a full yearly cycle and they are primarily suitable for people living within the Northern hemisphere, as that is where I am based. I hope that working with these meditations helps you to align your life within the natural world and helps you to reconnect. If you would like to join the monthly group, you will find information on how to do so within the website under “groups” or send me an email.
This month we are focusing on both Samhain and the energies of Scorpio, which are interlinked. The themes are of death and shadow work.
Read MoreWe were once indigenous. We once had ties to the land and to each other and we knew how to live sustainably on the Earth. We knew how to look after ourselves and each other, we knew how to look after the spirits of the land, the animals, the birds and the fish. We made many mistakes and we learnt, through these mistakes, how to leave an area after it had been hunted too much or over fished. We learned how to prevent forest fires and how to regenerate an area of plants. We knew which plants treated human illness and we learned the best places to forage and the places to avoid. We knew how to work with the land. We knew which areas were sacred and those to be avoided. We knew how to survive and thrive. These memories are still there, embedded in our DNA. To access these memories is possible, when you learn how to fish or forage or how to connect with spirit. These skills are old skills and therefore accessible to all; like old hands going over ancient tools, our hands know what to do. We may be rusty but with practice it comes back and, when it comes, it does so with a deep knowing and understanding and a longing to return to what was once so lived and known. It is possible to connect to our own indigeny.
Read MoreIt’s always been there, this mystery of the feminine; a quiet and deep knowledge unfurling slowly and gently backstage within my consciousness as life passes. It catches me by surprise at times, expressing itself through my words before I blink.
Read MoreOver time I learned that the practices of the spirits I met from prehistoric Britain were part of a wider shamanic culture and the more that I was finding out about that, unearthing that and arguing that, the more that I could see that what had been lost in this land was akin to what indigenous peoples experience in their shamanic cultures. And the more that I connected with the spirits of prehistoric shamans, the more I began to create threads linking a British indigenous shamanic tradition with the modern world.
